The Roman Scholarship Winning Artists Group
Lipót Böhm was a French/Hungarian painter, who was the member of the Roman Scholarship Winning Artists Group alongside with Judit Reigl, Simon Hantai, Antal Bíró, Sándor Zugor, and Paul Hargitai. They all started their studies together at the Academy of Fine Arts under the wings of their master, István Szőnyi. Böhm and Bíró later on became the side-instructor of Szőnyi. All members of the Roman Scholarship Winning Artists Group were very close friends. They emmigrated to Paris and they created their art together.
Since they decided to leave the socialist Hungary and settle down in Paris to be able to create in freedom, the regime treated them as castaways: nobody metioned their names, nobody exhibited their artworks. They were forgotten.
The director of the Hungarian Academy of Rome, Tibor Kardos believed in their talent, therefore he decided to help the group by organizing exhibitions for them, which got a significant recognition. His patronage enriched the culture of Europe with the artworks of these exceptional Hungarian talents.
About his Art
The constructive forms of the compositions always characterized his art. He painted figural pictures and portraits with rich and vibrant colors, then after the 1980’s he turned towards geometric abstraction. He was fascinated by the monumental compositions, mosaics, figurines and murals as well.
Lipót Böhm's artworks are available at the Kálmán Makláry Fine Arts.
