The painting titled The Fertility of the Fields (1951), which was displayed also at Hantai's first exhibition in the gallery À L'Étoile scellée with support provided and preface written by André Breton, summarizes the artist's experiments with forms
performed during his early years in Paris. The colourful figures resembling guts, branches, bird nests, snakes and worms, together with the geometric shapes appearing on the edges and in the background of the picture present a vision-like scenery which Hantai created by scratching, scraping, sponging and dripping paint. - Agnes Berecz

A művész első, André Breton támogatásával és bevezetőjével az À L’Étoile scellée galériában rendezett kiállításán is szereplő A mezők termékenysége (1951) a korai párizsi évek formakísérleteit összegzi. A belekre, faágakra, madárfészekre, kígyókra és férgekre emlékeztető, sok színben pompázó figurák és a kép szélein illetve hátterében megjelenő geometrikus alakzatok látomásos tájképet alkotnak, amelyet Hantai karcolással, kaparással, felitatással és csurgatással hozott létre. - Berecz Ágnes
