InformELLEs Women Artists and Art-Informel in the 1950s/60s

From 11.10.2024 to 26.1.2025, Hessen Kassel Heritage is honouring ‘Informal Women Artists of the 1950s/60s’ with a special exhibition in the Neue Galerie.
Informal art developed from the early 1950s to the early 1960s to become the predominant art movement in Europe. Detached from classical principles of form and design, the open creative process was at the centre of the works. At first glance, this abstract movement appears to be a primarily male-dominated art movement. The exhibition now takes a new look at the art of Art Informel and honours high-calibre positions of 16 female artists, including Maria Lassnig, Brigitte Meier-Denninghoff, Judit Reigl, Mary Bauermeister, Marie-Louise von Rogister and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva. Alongside well-known names, long-forgotten female artists are rediscovered. The mechanisms of the art world are also traced on the basis of sociological questions about networks, exhibition participation and reception.
