About his Art
Sung Pil Chae is a South Korean contemporary artist, currently living in Paris, France. His artworks are a unique fusion of land art and contemporary painting. He represents respect and love towards our planet, Earth through his artworks. Sung Pil Chae uses different kinds of soil he collected during his journeys all over the world. He dilutes the soil with water and mixes it with glue, powdered gold and silver dust and Chinese paint. He uses different soils to reach a huge variety of natural colors. He creates abstract textural surfaces on the canvas, which refers to the surface of Earth.
About the Creative Process
Chae, works in a standing position, using a big brush with a long handle. Usually, he starts to apply the thick, dense mixture on the canvas, and then he drips and pours the more liquid material on the top of it. He pushes the brush hard into the paper base, crumpling, and tearing the glued-together layers of paper apart, leaving behind furrows and creases. To get the balance of light and shadow, he employs ink and silver. After pouring some water over the lying canvas, Chae lifts it up and turns it over, "drawing" over the earth paint with jets and drops dripping down. Then again he'll work with the brush and soil paint.
Sung Pil Chae is a doctoral candidate for Plastic Arts in the Université Paris. He had solo exhibitions throughout France, South Korea and China and took part in the 2011 and 2014 London Art Fair and 2012 Art Basel.
